Meet the Founders
Tyme Gigliotti, D.Ac., L.Ac.
Years of sports and martial arts began to take a toll on my knees. By my late 20’s my knees were hurting almost constantly every day. A close friend who was knowledgeable about herbs offered to help. She put together a poultice, applied it to my knees then tightly wrapped it in gauze. I quickly felt a soothing warmth. Then it started to feel hot. Then really, really hot. After about 15 minutes it began to feel like a balloon filled with scalding hot water was being inflated inside my knee joint. The pressure grew. And grew some more. At 20 minutes I thought my knee was going to explode. Then, just at the point when I thought I couldn’t take another minute I felt a huge pop, like the balloon had burst. Suddenly I felt tremendous laughter-inducing relief. My knee felt better than I could have ever imagined. The relief was amazing!
After summoning my courage, I let her apply it to my other knee. And I never felt any soreness again for almost thirty years. So that, combined with experiencing the healing benefits from some of the mysterious dark liquids in old brown bottles with hand-written labels in Chinese from my acupuncturist who was also a Xingyi Kung fu master, sparked my interest in what we commonly refer to as liniments.
In the early 2000’s I came across Tom Bisio’s magnificent book A Tooth From The Tiger’s Mouth. In it he included some recipes for some topical remedies. The simplicity and power of them inspired the mad scientist in me. For the next several years I explored and researched and experimented. My goal was to create high quality affordable liniments and topical remedies that targeted specific conditions. As a practitioner I was increasingly disappointed and frustrated with the available remedies. Because almost everything out there is a generic version of the same one-size-fits-all approach—”for sore, achy muscles and joints”.
Yes, some are pretty effective. But everyone’s needs are different! Is it a joint problem? Is it more muscular? Is it better with cold or heat? Is it worse in damp, rainy weather, or when the barometric pressure changes? Is it acute or chronic? Almost no other remedy maker takes these into account and even fewer bother to explain the specifics of how they’re meant to be used. There’s almost nothing else available that matches our quality as well as our focus on your specific needs.
Finally, after a great deal of fine-tuning in 2010 Seven Stars was born. I am deeply grateful to my countless patients who let me try out different recipes on them over many years. I am forever in your debt.
To your health!

East Asian medicine has been a part of Daniel’s life since childhood. Growing up, he received acupuncture and became familiar with traditional topical remedies such as Tiger Balm and Po Sum On Oil. His interest in herbal medicine began early as well, sparked by time spent in his grandparents’ health food store, where rows of herbs stored in glass jars inspired his curiosity. This early interest continued into his undergraduate studies in cultural anthropology. During this time, Daniel traveled to China, Niger, and Fiji, where he explored studied folklore, traditional medical practices, and medicinal plants.
His interest in preparing topical medicines began in 2014 after reading The Tooth from the Tiger’s Mouth by Tom Bisio. Inspired by the book, he began sourcing various herbs from shops in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. As his research deepened, he experimented with additional recipes, gradually filling his apartment with jars of herbs and handmade preparations. During this time, and building a friendship with his former teacher, Tyme Gigliotti, from Tai Sophia and discovering that Tyme was also creating his own topical medicines. Realizing their shared passion, they decided to combine their efforts and together developed Heart Dragon, along with several other formulas.
